Proper health and fitness requires basically three things. Proper diet, proper exercise and the most overlooked one, proper sleep. There are many other aspects but these three are the "biggies". Sleep is probably the most overlooked. One reason might be that sleeping is considered "down time" and is equated with laziness. While it may be "down time" for our minds, during sleep, our bodies are like an incredibly busy factory, building and repairing, cleaning and purging the totals from our awake, conscious hours. Without sleep our bodies cannot make progress. How many hours sleep do we need in a day? That is an almost unquantifiable question. For some it may be 6-8 hours, for others 10 hours won't be enough. There are so many variables it is hard to say. What is important is that we set aside sleep time into our total hours for the day's schedule rather than simply saying "I'll sleep when I am finished with everything else." Just as you schedule meals and when you plan to go to the gym, run, etc., you must plan when you are intending to sleep. Like my sweet little 19 year old Dixie here, I even try to get a nap in when I can. Lol!
Sleep. It's part of the equation.
